Who We Are
The Williamson-Pultneyville Historical Society (W-PHS) is the owner and sole steward of Gates Hall. We are dedicated to securing the legacy of Gates Hall as America's oldest, continuously active small community theater. Our mission is to kindle curiosity, inspire community involvement, and offer unforgettable historical experiences that bring the past to life.

Our Historic Properties
Nestled in the heart of the historic Pultneyville hamlet, our society owns and meticulously maintains three remarkable properties:
-
Society House (4130 Mill Street): A treasure trove of local history, the Society House is a welcoming hub where the past comes alive through exhibitions, artifacts, and educational programs.
-
Centennial Park (Pultneyville Center): Our beautiful park serves as a tranquil oasis, offering a serene place to reflect on our community's history and natural beauty.
-
Gates Hall (Built in 1825): Proudly listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places, Gates Hall stands as a testament to our enduring commitment to the arts and community gatherings. This hallowed space has witnessed historic discussions on religion, slavery, women's rights, and even played a role in supporting the Civil War effort. For over 150 years, Gates Hall has served as a cherished small community theater, earning its place as the oldest continuously active theater of its kind in the United States.
W-PHS Gates Hall Standing Committee
Our dedicated committee focuses on securing the legacy of Gates Hall as America's oldest, continuously active small community theater. This committee provides invaluable guidance and oversight for the preservation, maintenance, and effective stewardship of both the interior and exterior spaces of Gates Hall and its surroundings. By doing so, we ensure that Gates Hall remains a cherished and indispensable community resource for generations to come.
